2023-03-17

It has beenobserved that people tend to face sleeping problems such as Insomnia, which isa disorder in which a person finds it difficult to sleep and stay awake for mostof the hours at night. The key reason for insomnia is associated with stressand anxiety which results in sleepless nights and restlessness. In addition tothis, addiction to alcohol and caffeine also results in insomnia where peopleare unable to sleep properly which eventually affects their health drastically.

Theindulgence of people with technology and their constant urge to stay occupiedwith their hobbies and entertainment has led to less sleeping time and increasedtheir stress and anxiety. A study conducted by National Health Mission (2023)shows that 6-7% of the population of India is suffering from Insomnia or anysuch kind of mental disorder which results in sleeplessness and some majorissues such as increasing cases of suicides etc. This provides that it isimportant for people to have a stable sleeping cycle to concentrate on theirhealth and lead a normal life.

Here are some of the reasons why sleep is soimportant:

1.     Sleep plays a critical role in cognitive functioning. When we sleep, ourbrain consolidates the memories we formed during the day, making it easier forus to recall them later. Additionally, getting enough sleep helps withattention, concentration, and decision-making skills.

2.     Getting enough sleep is crucial for maintaining good physical health. Ithelps with the repair and regeneration of cells, tissues, and muscles.Furthermore, studies have shown that people who get enough sleep are lesslikely to develop chronic illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, andobesity.

3.     Sleep plays an essential role in regulating our emotions. When we'resleep-deprived, we tend to be more irritable, anxious, and moody. On the otherhand, getting enough sleep helps improve our mood, reduce stress, and promotefeelings of well-being.

4.     Getting enough sleep is also critical for improving productivity andperformance. When we're well-rested, we're more focused, alert, and energetic. This,in turn, allows us to be more productive and perform better at work or school.

NationalSleep Day is observed to spread awareness among people to ensure that people canunderstand the importance of good sleep and follow a routine to ensure goodhealth and well-being. Doctors also tend to provide some health tips to peoplewho are facing problems getting adequate sleep.
