National Deworming Day
2023-02-10Worms are one of the key causes of the poor health of children due to improper nutrients.
National Deworming Day is an initiative by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare,
Government of India which is celebrated on the 10 th Feb every year with a motive to improve
the health of children of age group 1 to 19 years. A report by WHO reveals that more than
241 million children between the age group of 1 and 14 years are at severe risk of intestinal
infection caused by the presence of Soil-Transmitted Helminths (STH). The deworming
initiative was started in the year 2015 through Anganwadi Centres as a platform to reach
profound areas in the cities and villages to provide access to education and healthcare
facilities. Deworming is essential in children because it prevents various health diseases
caused by the presence of worms in the intestine. If children are not regularly dewormed to
remove the intestinal worms, they tend to multiply by laying eggs which further leads to
severe damage to the body. These worms enter the intestines due to the poor hygiene and dirt
present in our surroundings with which small children get in contact.
The campaign started by the Government of India is directed towards treating children by
providing necessary healthcare services including the distribution of medicines at Anganwadi
Centres and spreading awareness among people to get the deworming dosage annually. The
medicine called Albendazole is given to children of age group 2 to 19 years for the
deworming process where as the tablet is crushed and then given to small children. The
medicine helps children to stay healthy and grow faster, resists them from getting infected
with any other infection and allows them to attend schools regularly. Additionally, several
ways are also taught to prevent the spread of worm infection which include, washing hands,
using sanitary latrines, drinking safe drinking water, washing vegetables and salads before
eating etc. This deworming day let’s carry the baton of healthcare and spread awareness
among people and small children to encourage them to participate in the campaign. Our
upcoming generation will be able to create a healthy society and eventually contribute
towards the growth of the nation.
