National Safe Motherhood Day

2023-04-11

National Safe Motherhood Day is observed on April 11th every year in India, to raise

awareness about the importance of maternal health and reduce maternal mortality rates. The

day is an initiative by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, and

was first celebrated in 2003. India has made significant progress in reducing maternal

mortality rates, which have declined from 556 per 100,000 live births in 1990 to 113 per

100,000 live births in 2016. However, the country still has a long way to go to achieve the

Sustainable Development Goal of reducing maternal mortality to less than 70 per 100,000

live births by 2030. The theme for National Safe Motherhood Day 2021 is “Motherhood is a

blessing from God”. The theme highlights the need to ensure quality, equitable, and dignified

maternal healthcare services to every woman in India, irrespective of socioeconomic status.

One of the main challenges in maternal healthcare in India is the lack of access to quality

healthcare services, particularly in rural areas. The government has taken several initiatives to

address this issue, such as the National Health Mission, which aims to provide accessible,

affordable, and quality healthcare services to all. However, more needs to be done to ensure

that every woman in India has access to quality maternal healthcare services. Another

challenge is the lack of awareness about maternal health among women and their families.

Women need to be informed about the importance of antenatal care, safe delivery practices,

and postnatal care. Families and communities need to be educated about the risks associated

with home deliveries and the importance of seeking professional care during childbirth.

National Safe Motherhood Day serves as a reminder of the importance of maternal health and

the need to work towards reducing maternal mortality rates. It provides an opportunity to

raise awareness about the challenges faced by women in accessing quality maternal

healthcare services and the need for concerted efforts by the government, civil society, and

individuals to address these challenges.

In conclusion, National Safe Motherhood Day is an important day to remind us of the need to

prioritize maternal health and reduce maternal mortality rates in India. It is a day to reflect on

the progress made so far, the challenges that still need to be addressed, and the actions that

need to be taken to ensure that every woman in India has access to quality maternal

healthcare services.
